The qualification covers workers who conduct vacation programs, as well as before and after school hours care activities for children of school age.

Outside school hours care workers:

  • Plan activities and provide care to children, facilitate their leisure and play enabling them to achieve their developmental outcomes.
  • May work under direct supervision or autonomously.
  • May have some supervisory responsibilities for volunteers and other workers.

Duration
Part-time learners: 12-18 months

Placement
This course consists of a combination of theory in a fortnightly online classroom and work placement. Work placement is organised by Gowrie Victoria and supported by visits from a Gowrie Victoria Trainer. Learners will also be expected to attend face-to-face tutorial sessions every six weeks to support them through their studies. 

You will learn how to:

  • Work within a legal and ethical framework
  • Identify and respond to children and young people at risk
  • Use an approved learning framework to guide practice
  • Ensure the health and safety of children
  • Promote and provide healthy food and drinks
  • Participate in work health and safety
  • Provide emergency first aid response in an education and care setting
  • Develop cultural competence
  • Work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers
  • Support the holistic development of children in school aged care
  • Support children to participate in school age care
  • Provide experiences to support children’s play and learning
  • Work collaboratively and respectfully with children in school age care
  • Develop and implement play and leisure experiences in school age care
  • Support behaviour of children and young people
  • Promote children’s agency
  • Support children to connect with their world
  • Embed sustainable practices in service operations

Eligibility:

  • Learners must meet the Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills standards for Certificate IV SAEC level study.
  • Learners must obtain a Working with Children (WWC) Check.
  • Learners must be at least 15 years of age and be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • If you are currently employed you may be eligible for a traineeship, find out more about Australian Apprenticeships (Traineeships) or speak to your employer.
