The wage increase for teachers and educators is expected to start hitting pockets this month.

In an exciting and historic occasion, the Federal Government has announced that wages for teachers and educators working in early childhood education and care will increase by 15 per cent.

On Wednesday 4 December, the signing of the Multi-Employer Agreement was made in Sydney. The Agreement will see teachers and educators receiving a pay rise of 10 per cent above the award rate in their bank accounts by this month, with the remaining 5 per cent increase by December 2025.

News of the increase was welcomed by Gowrie, who has played an active role in supporting the negotiations led by CELA and CCC for the last 18 months. CEO Susan Anderson and Early Childhood Educator from Gowrie Carlton Learning Precinct, Seb, attended the signing with Susan describing the news as a momentous occasion. “The wage increase ensures our teachers and educators get the professional recognition they so thoroughly deserve,” says Susan. “I am very proud that Gowrie has advocated on behalf of our valued team members to achieve this historic outcome.”

Seb, who represented workers in the Agreement, worked hard to push for higher wages and the cultural and social recognition of early childhood workers. “This is a monumental moment for educators. It’s a historic victory,” he said. “I would like to thank all of the Gowrie members who have supported the ongoing process and supported the work that has been done behind the scenes.”

Sue Chamberlain-Ward, Executive Manager, People & Culture, also expressed her delight at the news. “I’m absolutely thrilled this is happening for educators,” says Sue. “Certainly, the last 18 months for us has been hard work, but I know for decades people have been pushing for appropriate recognition of pay for people working in the early childhood sector.”

Teachers and educators across Gowrie are happy to hear the news. Here’s what some of them had to say about the wage increase.
