Our Gowrie Broadmeadows Valley team recently brought together families, staff and members of the community to the service to support the Cancer Council’s mission to raise vital funds for cancer research, support services, prevention programs and advocacy.

The team held a Biggest Morning Tea after being inspired by listening to heartfelt conversations with staff members and families who had experienced the pain of losing loved ones to cancer. “Hearing their experiences made me realise how many people in our community had been affected,” said Arabic Language Teacher Bassima, who led the organisation and donation process. “I felt a strong desire to bring everyone together, not only to raise funds but also to honour those we’ve lost and to stand with those still fighting. We wanted to raise awareness and funds in a meaningful, community-driven way.”

The event was a collaborative effort between staff, volunteers, families and even the children who assisted in preparing food such as Manaeesh, which is a beloved traditional Arabic flatbread topped with za’atar (a thyme, oregano, and sesame spice mix). “The children enjoyed spreading the toppings and watching the food come together,” expressed Bassima. “It was a fun, hands-on experience that helped them build fine motor skills and cultural awareness. They also learned about generosity and giving back by making food to share with the community.”

Families contributed food and made donations, with some sharing personal stories. Bassima described the atmosphere as being supportive, compassionate and full of community spirit. “There were moments of emotion and quiet reflection, but also laughter, storytelling, and a shared sense of purpose,” she says. “Children, families, and staff interacted openly, showing support and kindness to one another.”

The team exceeded their fundraising goal of $500 by reaching a total of $554, made possible by the generosity and support of Gowrie’s community at Broadmeadows Valley. Bassima described the feeling of joy and pride in the room being incredible when they realised they had achieved their goal. “We came together and performed a traditional dance which was a powerful moment of unity, culture, and shared achievement. It brought smiles, laughter, and a real sense of togetherness that perfectly reflected the spirit of the event,” she said.

It was a proud and emotional day for the team who worked so hard with the families and community members to help make a difference while also teaching children about compassion and the spirit of helping others.
