For those starting a rewarding career in early childhood, choosing the right training is a critical first step. In today’s market, it can be tempting to opt for a course that can be completed quickly online to start working as a qualified educator sooner. However, at Gowrie, we believe the most effective learning happens when theoretical knowledge is applied through real-world practice.
Our CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care is a comprehensive, blended program delivered over nine months. This approach ensures you not only learn the theory but also have plenty of time to see it in practice each week, building your skills and confidence by working alongside experienced educators.
Observe theory in practice
One of the major benefits of undertaking your studies at Gowrie is that classes are held on-site at our Exceeding-rated early learning service, Gowrie @ The Harbour, Docklands. This provides you with direct access to high-quality early childhood practices and in-person support from our facilitators. The classrooms feature large windows looking directly into the outdoor spaces, meaning you can discuss a developmental theory and then observe it happening in real-time.
This immediate connection between learning and practice is invaluable, as student Lucy shares. “Being near where all the children are and being able to observe while in class,” she says. “Another main benefit is being able to interact with other students. I’m getting out there, making friends and being able to help one another through the work.”
An essential part of the course structure includes classes where students engage in hands-on learning experiences where they practice nappy changing and toileting procedures, safe sleep practices for infants, and preparing bottles correctly, supported by our experienced facilitators. Trainer and Assessor Renee says that learning extends beyond just the classroom. “This active learning also extends to exploring the children’s program where students can observe intentional learning environments, outdoor play, and respectful relationships between educators and children—ensuring they feel confident and capable with the day-to-day responsibilities of an educator,” says Renee.

Flexible pathways: traineeship vs. placement
Gowrie offers two different options for study: traineeships and placement. A traineeship is a great option for those who want to earn while they learn, as you are employed either full or part time by an early childhood service. This provides a consistent environment with a dedicated mentor. On the other hand, placement-based studies offer more flexibility. While this is an unpaid position, you can choose hours that fit around your personal commitments and even gain experience across a variety of different services, broadening your perspective on the sector. Both trainees and placement-based students will attend class at our service at The Harbour one day per week.
Whether you choose to undertake your studies through a traineeship or placement arrangement, you will receive the same high level of on-site support and direct connection between theory and practice.
Proven excellence in training
In a recent annual survey by the Victorian Skills Authority (VSA), which monitors the performance and outcomes of vocational education and training (VET) in Victoria, the results offer a valuable look into the effectiveness of our training. The results were positive, with employers giving us a 100% satisfaction rating for our training, as a place to study, and for the improvement in trainees’ technical skills. We were also pleased to see that 86.4% of our students had a positive perception of our teaching and assessment process, and 87% saying they achieved their main reason for training. These results, which were above the Victorian average, motivate us to continue providing the best possible support for our students.
In a profession built on relationships and real-world interactions, face-to-face learning allows students to engage more deeply, reflect, ask questions in the moment, and build confidence through hands-on experiences. It’s this human connection with children, educators, and peers that builds truly capable educators.
