The children in Betayil room at Gowrie Docklands Kindergarten have been exploring art as a process rather than art as a product.
Programs have been rethinking the way they present art provocations for children and documenting how children interact with the resources. “We have found this to be very helpful for our observations as some children are less interested in the traditional art invitations” shared Liz, Educational Leader. “Children often communicate a lot through their mark making process. It gives us an insight into what the children are really interested in when interacting with a self-directed experience.”
Process art for children focuses on the creative journey rather than the end product. Through process art, children are encouraged to freely explore various materials, techniques, and ideas without expectations. This approach encourages children to take risks, make discoveries, and develop confidence in their artistic abilities. It helps promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-reflection as children explore different ways of working and learning from their experiences.
