Jacob Mead was enrolled to study language teaching at university when Covid intervened. It was during those pandemic years that he decided to change path and focus on a career in early childhood. “I always knew I wanted to work with children,” Jacob said. “My mum and two sisters all work in education as well. Early childhood seemed like a good fit for me.”
Jacob found the idea of a traineeship with Gowrie Victoria an appealing option and signed up to complete his Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, while working part-time at the Carlton North service.
“It’s such a great concept, being able to work on the job while studying, and taking that knowledge and applying it in the classroom,” Jacob said. “It’s a rewarding experience and a good way to learn.”
Jacob, who recently completed his traineeship, has plans to one day enroll in the Gowrie Victoria Diploma course. “I found the support, while I was studying, so amazing. There was always someone willing to help,” he said. “Gowrie Victoria creates a real sense of togetherness. It just feels like everyone is there to support each other and the children, it’s a lot like family.”
The Gowrie Victoria Early Childhood Traineeship Program allows students to work alongside experienced educators, learning on the job, and earning while they learn. Trainees attend a Gowrie class one day a week to complete their qualification, while working at an early learning service close to home the other four days.
Trainees are also supported by a mentor at their early learning service, as well as Gowrie Victoria’s class facilitator.
“If you’re passionate about supporting and working with children, you should definitely give it a go,” Jacob said. “It’s hard work but worth it.”
Gowrie Victoria’s upcoming intakes include:
30th May – CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
13th July – CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (need to have Certificate III completed to enrol)
